Allaire crouched down and studied the hoof prints in the rich soil for a moment before lifting her eyes to scan the Great Plain of Odrin. Cor’Vos and the Anthracite were mere dots on the horizon. She had been following them all morning without losing sight of them. There was not a dip or hillock to hide them and the soft soil made the tracking easy. It was dawn on the island of Platar. An indigo sky was calm and cloudless above the rocky outcroppings of the island. It was the first calm sea the coast had seen for weeks but no villagers were about to see it. The once-lively township was desolate with an eerie silence. Buildings whose bright white paint once shimmered in the darkest nights were now blackened by soot, and their windows gave way to burned-out interiors. Still, he preferred its mighty ornamentation and steel firmness to the creaking of his own wicker throne back home. Indeed it made him feel stronger and larger than ever to occupy the Dragon’s seat.
